June 6, 5:50 a.m.: Naval bombardment of Pointe du Hoc began, including guns of the battleship USS Texas. Three companies (70 men per) of Rudder’s 2nd Ranger Battalion were to land at Pointe du Hoc at 6:30 a.m., but were delayed. Per plan, Schneider’s command (plus three companies of the 2nd) joined the Omaha Beach assault. June 6, 7:10 a.m.: Two landing craft were lost, but the Rangers debarked and started up the cliffs. They pressed upward, supported by the destroyer USS Satterlee. One of the Rangers’ DUKWs was disabled by enemy fire en route to Pointe du Hoc. The engine failed. Three Rangers were casualties, including one killed. June 6, 7:40 a.m.: Most of the remaining Rangers reached the top. June 6, 9:30 a.m.: The Germans had previously moved the guns southward from their initial prepared positions. Despite fierce resistance, Rangers found and destroyed the guns pushing onward to cut the highway south of Pointe du Hoc.

In de afgelopen 16 jaar hebben mijn vrouw en ik Normandië vaak bezocht. Ter herdenking van D-day, 6 juni 1944, de landing in Normandië. Ontmoeting met vrienden en vele gesprekken met WWII-veteranen.

We maakten veel foto's, films en ik schreef veel muziek over de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In deze video zie je onze keuze van de foto's. Foto's die een goede herinnering bij ons achterlaten over onze bezoeken aan Normandië en Londen.

Je ziet veteranen maar ook een onvergetelijk bezoek aan Normandië met de Nederlandse 110 TCIE die toen net terugkwam uit Afghanistan.

I was impressed (and every time when I see it again) by Walter Skudra when he told me about his motivation to pray for the victims of Naziregime. Walter Skudra was a member of the 1st Infantry Division (USA) who landed on Omaha Beach, on June 6th, 1944. His part is filmed in the Emmy-awarded documentary Omaha Beach, Honor and Sacrifice which I had the privilege to write the music. 

Het documentary  "Nazi Concentration Camps" is a documentary that I found in the Public Domain Section of the Archive of the United States Government. It is an official documentary report compiled from films made by military photographers serving with the Allied Armies as they advanced into Germany. The films were made pursuant to an order issued by General Dwight D.Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Western Europe.

Een compositie van ook weer vele jaren geleden. Met de gebeurtenissen van nu, het Coronavirus, werd voor mij een compositie getiteld “The Landing” weer actueel en ik heb het weer opzocht omdat ik een gelijkenis zag. Ik zal proberen uit te leggen waarom. 6 Juni 1944 is HET kantelpunt van de geschiedenis van de vorige eeuw. Je hebt de periode ervoor en je hebt de periode erna. Er is geen moment te duiden die zoveel teweeg heeft gebracht als D-day, de landing in Normandië. Keuze tussen vrijheid of geen vrijheid. Keuze tussen wel oorlog of geen oorlog (en het stoppen daarvan). Een impact op mensen die zijn weerga niet kent. Tot nu toe. Iemand zei ooit: “het is moeilijk de geschiedenis te herkennen als je er middenin staat”. Dat is ook zo.

Maar met een virus, een calamiteit die de hele aarde in zijn greep krijgt, net als de As (Duitsland Italië en Japan) in de 30-tiger en 40-tiger jaren, dat zie je niet vaak. Rampen als 9/11 hadden wereldwijd een grote impact, maar het werd wel g ...
