German armed merchant cruiser Komet arrived at Nauru and warned the British dock personnel to evacuate without signaling any alarm. Upon the completion of the evacuation, Komet shelled the facilities, destroying much of the port. Nauru's dock would be rebuilt in 10 weeks, but the port never returned to full capacity during the war.
